Review: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Lené suggested this book to me. Her previous recommendation (Life of Pi) was outstanding so I had hopes for this one. I was however disappointed. It just wasn’t a story I could get into. I know its good how the autistic boy figures things out etc. But to me there’s not enough of a story.

Mini review: Life of Pi

May 23, 2006

I have just finished Life of Pi by Canadian Yann Martel. There were bits at the start of the book that made me doubt whether I was going to enjoy this book, but I’m glad I kept on reading because Pi dragged me into his world without much trouble after that. There are some hilarious [...]

Review: "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman

May 12, 2006

Finished reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman today. This book can be classified as Americana with a mix of mythology, but I prefer Urban Fantasy. It has won the 2002 Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker awards, all for Best Novel. It was also nominated for Best Novel in the 2002 BSFA Award. This is not [...]

"Inside man" mini review. No spoilers.

I was really not expecting too much of this movie. I know it has been getting some good reviews, but surely it was just another bank robbery movie. Well it ain’t. Do yourself a favour and go and see this movie. This is Denzel Washington’s best movie in a long time. Clive Owen is superb [...]

King Kong? More like King Con.

This movie is utter utter nonsense. It shows what happens when a Kiwi directs a movie about animals (they don’t have them in NZ). It also shows how many people still have no concept of nature. I realise this is just good yarn, but for crying out load it is supposed to be a gorilla after [...]

Nothing beats Beethoven (for me anyway)

November 26, 2005

I have been suffering of music fatigue lately. You know; when everything on your iPod sounds old. Then last night I stuck Beethoven’s Triple Concerto by Herbert von Karajan and I just realised again what an absolute genius this man was. Nowadays we use the word genius way too much, but I don’t think anyone [...]

Review: The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks

November 1, 2005

I’ve recently finished The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It carries some of the themes from His Dark Materials (some of the best books you’re likely to read) and The Matrix (the good one). If you enjoyed either of these, you’re likely to enjoy The Traveller. Almost [...]

Brideshead Revisited: Best tv drama of all time?

October 31, 2005

They are currently repeating Brideshead Revisited on ITV3 in the UK. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this is probably the finest adaptation of a novel put to film. It is a real work of astounding and living art. It is very rare that you find something so perfect. The cast alone [...]

The Best Harry Potter yet?

October 14, 2005

SPOILER! I have just finished reading the The Half-Blood Prince, the 6th Harry Potter book. I don’t know why, but the critics did not rate this book as highly as the others. I thought it was very good; possibly the best one yet. I’m glad no-one spoiled the ending for me so I won’t spoil [...]

Review: Barry Hilton

July 1, 2005

Yesterday a friend offered me a ticket to go and see Barry Hilton. Now historically I can’t stand South African stand ups. Eddie Ecksteen bored me to tears. Casper always takes things too far (although my wife literally finds him hysterical) and so it goes on. With this in mind, I wasn’t expecting too much [...]
